Islamabad : Rapid scientific advancement in Islamic countries depends on exploring frontier technologies and the scientists of the OIC member countries need to focus modern applications of biotechnology, as it is the future of science.
Advisor Science Dr Anwar Nasim stated this while inaugurating a 3-day International Workshop on “Frontiers in molecular biology and biotechnology” at OIC Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) here on Monday. Scientists, researchers and other relevant professionals from Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Yemen, Algeria, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and other countries are attending the workshop. It is focusing on training of professionals in the emerging applications of molecular biology and biotechnology.
Dr Nasim stressed the need of strengthening disciplines of molecular biology and biotechnology in our universities and in medical research institutions. Eighteen sessions of the workshop, six each day, will focus on different subjects such as protein engineering, signalling in cancer cells, discovery of new genes, industrial enzymes, strategies to identify disease genes, gene cloning, public health and pharmaceuticals, DNA barcode and commercialisation of biotechnology.
Renowned resource persons from Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Pakistan and United States will conduct training. Trainers include Dr. Sevnur Mandaci of Marmara Research Centre (MRC) from Turkey, Professor Soroush Sardari from Pasteur Institute of Iran, Dr. Abid Azhar Co-Director General of Karachi Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering (KIBGE), Dr. Imran Khan Associate Director of Clinical Proteomics from University of California, Dr. Shahid Mahmood Baig Head of the Biotechnology Division of National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Dr. Muhammad Afzal, former executive editor of Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal of the World Health, Dr Andrew Shelling. Associate Professor of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from University of Auckland, New Zealand, will speak on “New strategies to identify disease genes, Dr. CH Nair from Australia will talk on industrial applications of biotechnology.
